CHALLENGE TIPS & ADVICE?
Having completed this challenge 2 years in a row now and having climbed
the mountain dozens of times, we have compiled a list of tips and advice below which we
feel will be of benifit to novice climbers.
|
1. It is most important that when climbing you wear suitable clothing and footware |
|
2. Bring a change of clothing with you,so when you complete the climb you have something dry to change into |
|
3. Always use the toilets at base camp before you start your climb as you don't want to be caught short on the mountain. |
|
4. Bring a mobile phone with you or climb with someone who has a mobile phone with them and also leave your phone details with a member of staff at base camp before you climb. |
|
5. If you are on any medication please bring with you. |
|
6. Food will be available free of charge to all climbers on your return, however make sure you have some fruit and a drink with you as it does get thirsty up there! It is also vital to prevent dehydration and dizziness. |
|
7. Please do not litter the mountain. After your climb please bring your waste and dispose in the litter bins which will be provided at basecamp. |
* All climbers must register their climb each day at basecamp before
they climb the mountain and again upon their return. This is vitally important for all
involved in the challenge. Remember it's not a race and you climb at your own pace ,
theirs no prizes for best times.
How can I prepare for the Climb?
Although Croagh Patrick is not a technical mountain climb, it is a major
challenge and the rigors of altitude should not be underestimated. The pace of your
ascent coupled with good acclimatization will help you on the climb but it is essential
to be mentally and physically prepared before you start. Regular hikes are one of the
best ways to prepare, increasing frequency and length, as you get closer to the
challenge. All aerobic exercises and cycling, running, swimming and stair climbing are
good for strengthening the cardiovascular system. We recommend that you start training
at least one month before your mountain climbing adventure.
Emergency Services
In the event of an emergency on the mountain, the local Order of
Malta unit will be on standby to assist in any emergency that may
arise.
