WHAT IS AUTISM?
"Autism is a lifelong condition to which there is no
cure"
Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears within the first
few years of a child's life. It is a result of a neurological disorder that affects the
functioning of the brain and impacts the normal development of the brain in the areas
of social interaction, communication, and cognitive function.
Autism is referred to as a spectrum
disorder (ASD) meaning the symptoms can occur in any
combination and with varying frequency. ASD's are considered to be the result of a
neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain. Children and adults
with autism typically have difficulties in verbal and non-verbal communication, social
interactions, and leisure or play activities. Autism is found in all parts of the world
and in all types of famlies.
The incidence of autism in Ireland is believed to be similar to the UK and the US
figures of 1 child per 160 of population. It is much more common in boys. According to
the Autism Society of America, the condition is 5 times as common as Down syndrome and
3 times as common as juvenile diabetes.
Exactly what causes autism is still unknown, however we are heartened by current
research developments as scientists, psychologists and psychiatrists from many
countries are moving closer to piecing together the puzzle that is autism. It must be
noted that Autism is not currently curably, but is highly treatable and symptoms can be
lessened with the correct treatment and support.
