MAYO AUTISM ACTION
Mayo Autism Action was founded by a group of parents in Mayo who had
children with Autism. These families were concerned at the lack of facilities for their
children, particularly in the educational area. While some school places were available
to some children, these did not specialise in Autism specific education and training.
The Mayo group were particularly concerned that an internationally recognised programme
with proven success rates (Applied Behavioural Analysis) was not available in
Mayo, despite persistent lobbying. Indeed, the nearest centres were Galway or
Mullingar, both of which had long waiting lists for their own areas.
Thus the group drew up a systematic and costed proposal for centre in Mayo, to provide
services to families in areas that they had identified as problematic. This proposal is
currently with the Department of Education and Science awaiting sanction.
